ALXNDRA is a season-less street wear, accessories and jewellery brand in London. With an East meets West aesthetic drawing inspirations from Japnanese culture and "Kawaii". Creating key pieces with a 'Slow Fashion' ethos ALXNDRA experiments to update classic staples, injecting excitement into your everyday wear and style. Making timeless, well loved pieces for your wardrobe with longevity in mind.
I am basically a big japanese culture loving nerd! I enjoy fusing child-like fun from my illustrations and blending that seamlessly into an overall minimalist, yet alternative aesthetic for my products.
Fine jewellery is the newest addition to the ALXNDRA project having only started in 2018. Themes for my jewellery will continue to pull inspiration from my favourite subject: Japanese culture, with my first collection titled Ramen Lovers! It is as the name suggests all about RAMEN - a Japanese soup based food usually consisted of noodles with extra accompaniments such as pork slices, bean sprouts and soy marinated egg. I simplified my ideas within this concept to create everyday-to-night wearable accessories!
About Alexandra Cook - Illustrator/Designer
I am a London based freelance illustrator, textiles print design and jewellery designer. I have a background and degree in fashion and textiles being a graduate from Central Saint Martins and London College of Fashion.
I was a textiles grad turned illustrator just trying to get my work around and noticed a little. I wasn't all too sure what I wanted to do after graduation and I craved a way to express my creativity. I started ALXNDRA soon after this and it's development has always been a bit of an experiment!
It feels like I have always been influenced by Japanese culture but I guess it probably stems from watching anime as a kid. It didn't take me long to discover the beauty it has to offer and dreams of visiting Japan soon pursued. I finally did a two week trip in 2016 and it definitely surpassed all my expectations! Although my work had often been influenced by Japan before my trip, actually seeing the sights in person changed everything for me. It solidified my love for the culture which continually surprises me with new topics for projects. It fought well to keep my influences rooted deep in such a historically rich and alluring country.
Now alongside ALXNDRA, I also work full time as a freelance illustrator. I have been lucky enough to work privately for small clients and also be involved in bigger projects such as fabric print design for designer Sabinna, band merchandise for multiple bands and many enjoyable collaborations with some great independent companies and artists (Family Store Brighton , Super Unofficial , Black Water Studios etc). I am also a published illustrator with card and stationery company Whale & Birdwith some of my designs having been stocked in shops such as Paperchase and Scribbler.
ALXNDRA is committed to producing locally in the UK, because I believe in supporting local and small businesses. It is fortuitous that my Dad has been working in the jewellery industry since the 70's. He has been vital in my new jewellery designing pursuits and has been helping to steer me in the right direction :) I wish to keep the family history going and I am proud to say that I now work with manufacturing companies that my Dad has also been working with for several family generations!
